Marrakech and Fes Travel Ideas

This is an example itinerary with suggested excursions that takes you to Fes, one of the great cities of Islam and the most precious of all Morocco's treasures, and then onto the vibrant city of Marrakech. The contrast between the two cities make this combination a very interesting holiday, particularly with the different choices of riads and boutique hotels available in each city.

As with all our suggested itineraries we will customise it to provide a Morocco holiday tailor made to your preferences.

The cost of the itinerary as described (except excursions and guides) is POA per person, based on two people sharing a twin or double room with flights from London and transfers included, when you depart on

Day 1

Flight to Fes

Arrive at Fes airport in the late evening where you will be met and transferred to the Riad Maison Bleue by a representative of the riad.

Four nights in a deluxe room with breakfast while you explore this Imperial city. There are a variety of very good restaurants in which to dine each evening.

Day 2

The core attraction is Old-Fes, the medina with its relentless wave of activity and the tanneries. A trip up to the Mernid Tombs will give you a wonderful view over the city. A guide (paid locally) will take you round the maze of thousands of lanes that make up the medina, covering busy souks, palaces, monuments and the infamous tanneries with their pungent smells.

Day 3

Excursion to Meknes and Volubilis

This full day excursion includes a visit to Moulay Idriss, named after a prominent Moroccan Saint, lunch at the imperial city of Meknes and onto the Ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis (not included).

Day 4

Free day in Fes

Having already visited the Medina with a guide, why not face the labyrinth of the medina by yourselves, getting wonderfully lost in the 9000 alleyways and bartering for goods to your hearts content; or consider an excursion to see the monkeys in the Cedar Forests of Middle Atlas Mountains near Azrou (paid locally).

Day 5

Train from Fes to Marrakech

Using the train between Fes and Marrakech is now the most popular way to travel between the two cities. It is relaxed, cheap (must be paid in Morocco), comfortable and, although not one of the "great train journeys" of this world, is interesting with its ever changing scenery.

The journey is around 7 hours, with trains leaving hourly after 6am so the choice of departure time is yours. On arrival in Marrakech you will be transferred by our representative to the Riad Les Yeux Bleues where you will have four nights accommodation with breakfast.

Marrakech Medina

Relax at your Riad, or wander into the main square for your first glimpse of Marrakech's lively meeting place. Take a glass of mint tea in one of the squares cafes and watch the crazy world go by. Be sure to go to one of the roof top terraces to watch the sun set behind the Minaret of the Koutoubia Mosque.

Marrakech has a large variety of restaurants as well as the open air stalls in the Djmaa el Fna.

Medina Gates

Days 5 to 8

Take an historical city guide (paid locally) for half a day to help get your bearings, and then dive into the rabbit-warren of the souks to shop-till-you-drop.

Hire a caleche (horse drawn carriage) and head into the Palmeraie for a 2 - 3 hour drive.

An excursion into the High Atlas Mountains to do some walking or horse riding, or simply to see the breathtaking scenery and have a leisurely lunch.

Sea Wall

Visit the beautiful Ourika Valley, or take a day trip to the lovely coastal town of Essaouira.

The possibilities are endless! Our representative can arrange these tours round Marrakech or further afield.

Jamaa El Fna

Day 9

Return to London

You will be transferred by our Representative to Marrakech Airport.
